Monte Morrone wildfires burn 230 hectares in Abruzzo
Wildfires continue to burn across Monte Morrone in the Abruzzo region, specifically impacting the municipalities of Roccacasale, Corfinio, and Popoli. The blaze has destroyed over 230 hectares of vegetation, prompting a massive emergency response involving the Vigili del Fuoco, Protezione Civile, and the Italian Army. The Army is deployed to create firebreaks to protect residential areas.
Aerial firefighting efforts include Canadair aircraft and regional helicopters. Due to the intensity of the fire, local authorities in Sulmona and the Valle Peligna have issued ordinances banning water extraction for irrigation to ensure sufficient supply for firefighting aircraft and ground crews.
While recent rainfall has slowed the fire's progress, officials remain on high alert as some areas continue to reignite. Regional authorities are also monitoring other active fire fronts in Bisegna, Rocca di Cambio, and Montereale.
