Monte Plata receives torch for Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games

Victor Pichardo, executive director of the Dominican Republic's Airport Department, accepted the torch of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Monte Plata on Tuesday. He said, “Recibimos con mucho entusiasmo la Antorcha… que representa la unión de todos los deportistas centroamericanos y del Caribe.”

The relay passed through the municipalities of Sabana Grande de Boyá, Monte Plata and Bayaguana, with provincial governor Rafaela Javier Gomera, senators, deputies, mayors and community leaders in attendance. Journalist Primitivo Cadete received the flame from Pichardo in Sabana Grande de Boyá, symbolising the link between institutional leadership and sports coverage.

Monte Plata, described as the “capital of Dominican sport,” highlighted its legacy as the birthplace of athletes such as Elly De La Cruz, Gabriel Mercedes, Luguelín Santos, Luisito Pie and Zacarías Bonnat. Officials noted that around 50 local athletes are slated to compete for the Dominican team at the 2026 Games, underscoring the province’s continued contribution to national athletics.
