Monte Rosa alpinist incidents: rescue of injured climber and fatal fall on Breithorn Orientale

A solo alpinist fell into a deep crevasse near the Castore glacier on Monte Rosa at roughly 4,000 m on the morning of 10 July. Valdostan Alpine Rescue located the climber using aerial observations, extracted him with ropes and equipment, and transported him to the Parini Hospital in Aosta for checks. His injuries were assessed as non‑serious.

On 9 July, another alpinist died while descending the Breithorn Orientale section of Monte Rosa, also around 4,000 m, during a double‑rope descent. The Valle d'Aosta rescue service recovered the body and moved it to Champoluc, where identification was handled by the local mountain rescue authority. The other climbers present were unharmed.
