Italian regions combat widespread forest fires amid hot, dry August

A series of forest fires erupted across Italy in early August 2026. In the Reggio Emilia province, a blaze in Vedriano near Canossa burned about five hectares, prompting five fire crews, a Canadair aircraft and a helicopter to fight the front that stretched 800 m. In Suvereto, Livorno, two regional helicopters and eight ground squads tackled flames spreading under a high‑voltage line. The Lago di Vico reserve in Viterbo saw a 1,000 m² arson‑linked fire, traced to an illegal bivouac, extinguished by park guards, Carabinieri forestali, civil protection and fire brigades.

Firenzuola, Tuscany, experienced the most severe incident, with 35 ha of steep forest consumed; twenty volunteer squads, two helicopters and a Canadair were deployed. Rome’s Massimina district also faced a wind‑driven blaze that threatened a woodland area, but no injuries were reported. Local authorities in Sassuolo extended pre‑alert measures for wildfire risk until 16 August, urging residents to avoid open fires and report smoke.

Across the affected regions, fire services, volunteers, the Carabinieri, civil protection and regional coordination units have been mobilised, employing aerial drops, ground crews and heavy equipment to contain the flames and protect communities.
