Montenegro advances border digitalization and joint crossings

Božidar Savović, State Secretary in Montenegro’s Ministry of Transport, emphasized the importance of infrastructure improvements, joint border crossings, and digitalization to enhance the flow of passengers and goods. Speaking at a panel discussion in Brussels regarding the Western Balkans – Eastern Mediterranean (WBEM) transport corridor, Savović noted that these reforms are vital for regional connectivity and Montenegro’s tourism potential.

Savović highlighted the joint border station at Bijelo Polje with Serbia, opened in 2024 on the TEN-T network, as a successful example of the ‘one-stop shop’ principle. This implementation has reduced passenger train delays by approximately 30 minutes and shortened freight train border procedures by up to 60 minutes.

The Ministry is also looking toward unifying controls at road border crossings with Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina to manage increased tourist traffic. Furthermore, the adoption of eFTI legislation is cited as a key step in the digitalization of transport processes to support economic progress.
