Balkan road safety: Winter equipment rules and traffic disruptions

Drivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina are preparing for the upcoming winter season, which brings mandatory equipment regulations. From November 1 to April 1, vehicles must be equipped with winter tires on all four wheels or winter tires on drive wheels combined with snow chains. Penalties for individuals failing to comply are 40 KM, while legal entities face fines ranging from 500 to 5,000 KM. Drivers are also reminded to remove snow and ice from vehicles to ensure visibility and safety.

In Montenegro, traffic conditions are currently affected by wet and slippery roads. Significant traffic disruptions are occurring due to roadwork, including the reconstruction of the Đurđevića Tara bridge on the M-6 highway, and the Ocean Lava Montenegro triathlon event, which has caused temporary closures on several major routes in the Boka Kotorska region. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes and exercise caution near cliffs and narrow passages.

In Croatia, the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) reports increased traffic and various restrictions due to ongoing road maintenance and accidents. Notable works include repairs on the A3 motorway and various bridge and tunnel renovations, which may result in lane narrowings or temporary closures.
