Montenegro applies for $15 million to climate-proof education system
Montenegro’s Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MPNI) has applied for $15 million in non-refundable grants from the Adaptation Fund to strengthen the educational system's resilience to climate change.
Developed in collaboration with UNICEF and World Bank experts, the project aims to upgrade educational infrastructure, including the renovation of schoolyards and the equipping of classrooms. The initiative also includes teacher training and the development of new textbooks and teaching materials focused on climate change.
Minister Anđela Jakšić-Stojanović stated that the project is designed to raise ecological awareness, foster ‘green skills’ among students, and encourage innovation in green technologies. The proposal aligns with the National Education Reform Strategy 2025–2035 and the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan. A decision on the funding is expected by the end of the year, with funds potentially becoming available in 2027.
