Montenegro exhausts legal options for Svetozar Marović extradition
Sergej Sekulović, State Secretary in the Montenegrin Ministry of Justice, stated that all formal legal avenues for the extradition of Svetozar Marović from Serbia have been exhausted. He noted that Montenegro has sent three formal requests and five urgent reminders over the past five to six years to facilitate the process.
Sekulović emphasized that Montenegro cannot exercise sovereign authority on Serbian territory. He remarked that if the statute of limitations on the sentence expires on October 10, Marović will be a free man regarding that specific criminal offense, though the prosecution may still pursue other proceedings.
While making a joke about using special forces to kidnap Marović—comparing the hypothetical scenario to former U.S. President Trump’s approach to Maduro in Venezuela—Sekulović clarified that no further legal steps can be taken by the Montenegrin side. He expressed doubt that a significant shift in the stance of Serbian authorities is expected in the coming days.
