Montenegro advances EU accession and reduces public debt

Montenegro is advancing its European Union integration through several key developments. At a Western Balkans conference in Vienna, European Affairs Minister Maida Gorčević announced that work on the EU Accession Agreement has begun, with the goal of closing remaining negotiation chapters by the end of the year. Austrian Minister Claudia Bauer expressed strong support for Montenegro's candidacy, noting the country's significant potential to become the 28th EU member.

Economically, IMF data indicates that Montenegro has seen one of the largest reductions in public debt-to-GDP ratios in Europe since 2020. While the debt stood at 108.4% of GDP in 2020, it is projected to reach approximately 62.4% by 2026.

In terms of governance, the Central Bank of Montenegro and the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption are coordinating to implement new legal powers. These powers allow the Agency to access bank account data of public officials to verify income and asset reports. Additionally, the Ministry of Economic Development is preparing the country for the EU's Internal Market Information (IMI) system to facilitate administrative cooperation with EU member states.
