Montenegro government approves EU sanctions and diplomatic updates

The Government of Montenegro has passed several key decisions regarding foreign policy, European integration, and market supervision. Acting without a formal session, the government approved 16 agenda items, including updates to international restrictive measures in alignment with European Union regulations. These measures address the situation in Belarus, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and cyberattacks threatening the EU.

Other significant decisions include the establishment of diplomatic relations with Papua New Guinea and the creation of a coordination body for market supervision. The government also addressed administrative capacity strengthening within the framework of the free movement of goods.

In response to these legislative moves, Boris Mugoša, a member of the European Alliance, criticized the government’s approach. He argued that the proposed measures lack consultation with municipalities and employers and are inconsistent with the macroeconomic and fiscal policy guidelines for 2026–2029 adopted recently. Mugoša expressed concerns regarding the long-term stability and sustainability of the public finance system, suggesting the measures may be politically motivated ahead of next year’s elections.
