Montenegro outlines climate neutrality goals and EU path
Damjan Ćulafić, Montenegro’s Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development, outlined the nation’s climate goals during a conference at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Speaking on the theme of ‘Climate Change and Green Transition: Green Agenda for the Western Balkans,’ Ćulafić stated that Montenegro is pursuing a path toward improved quality of life and full integration into the European Union.
Ćulafić highlighted that while Montenegro’s contribution to global emissions is minimal, the country recognizes the importance of its ecosystems in mitigating climate change impacts. He noted that recent wildfires in Montenegro serve as a concrete example of these changing conditions, though he emphasized the state’s increased readiness and preventive measures this year.
To support these objectives, Montenegro has established a legal and strategic framework, including the adoption of the Law on Climate Change and the Low-Carbon Development Strategy. This strategy serves as the central framework for the country’s journey toward achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
