Bosnia and Herzegovina: Drug trafficking convictions and political tensions

In the “Transporter” case, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has issued a first-instance verdict regarding a large-scale drug trafficking operation. The group was accused of smuggling over three tons of drugs, including 35 kilograms of cocaine from the Netherlands and Belgium, and approximately 3,000 kilograms of cannabis from Albania and surrounding regions.

Key sentences include 10 years in prison for Petar Dukić and five years for Mladen Milovanović. Bojan Cvijetić, a former advisor to the Ministry of Security, received a one-year sentence. Several other individuals received sentences ranging from six months to two years.

Separately, Bosnia and Herzegovina Defence Minister Zukan Helez visited Banja Luka, where he addressed recent threats and issued a warning against secessionist movements, stating that such attempts would face a “brutal response.” Following his visit, SNSD lawmakers Sanja Vulić and Milorad Kojić filed a criminal complaint against Helez and Brigadier Šefik Čimpo, alleging abuse of office related to the termination of contracts for two Armed Forces members accused of glorifying Ratko Mladić. Helez responded by criticizing the lawmakers.
