Montenegro pursues economic and energy reforms for EU accession

Montenegro is focusing on economic and structural reforms to facilitate its accession to the European Union. During recent discussions on sustainable leadership, experts emphasized that attracting foreign investment requires regulatory stability, an efficient state apparatus, and a qualified workforce. The European Investment Bank has provided 1.5 billion euros in financing since 2009, primarily targeting transport and the private sector.

Key areas for development include the energy transition and environmental protection. Officials noted that while the energy transition offers significant opportunities, it must not compromise environmental integrity. There is a push for increased investment in renewable energy and the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure, with a goal of reaching 35,000 electric vehicles by 2030.

Additionally, challenges remain regarding infrastructure and social inclusivity. In northern regions, poor road conditions are hindering the development of agriculture and tourism. On the legislative front, the government is working toward closing environmental chapters in EU negotiations by December, aiming to bridge the gap between strategic policy and practical application.
