Montenegro traffic expert urges harsher fines amid record road accidents

Road safety specialist Goran Čarapić warned that Montenegro records the highest number of traffic accidents and injuries in Europe. He called on drivers to lower speed, avoid alcohol and drugs, and advocated for a drastic increase in penalties. Čarapić suggested that the most serious offences could carry prison terms, while speed violations causing accidents should be fined up to €8,000, with possible vehicle seizure and license revocation. He compared the proposed penalties with those in Austria and Greece, where fines can reach €6,000 and €2,000 respectively. The remarks come as Montenegro’s parliament prepares to vote on a new Road Safety Law that would codify stricter punishments.

Čarapić emphasized that any selective enforcement must be avoided, especially now that the country is preparing for EU accession.
