Balkan summer festivals showcase theatre, literature and folk culture across the region

Throughout July and August 2026 a series of cultural festivals animated towns across the Western Balkans. In Tivat, Montenegro, the 21st edition of the Mediterranean Theatre Festival Purgatorije opened on 1 July with the regional debut of Jean‑Paul Sartre’s “Prljave ruke” staged by Juga Radivojević. The same town hosted a literary evening for novelist Zoran Predin, presenting his new novel “Cirkus Astralis”.

In Croatia, Vrgorac celebrated poet Tin Ujević with a three‑day program of awards, exhibitions and performances from 3 to 5 July. Nearby Donji Miholjac held its 52nd “Miholjačko sijelo” folk festival, attracting over 2 000 participants. Zadar became the hub of contemporary puppetry from 1 to 5 July with the international Mediteraneo festival, featuring companies from Slovenia, France, Spain and Hungary, plus concerts by Pocket Palma and DJ Antonija Šarić. Kraljevica’s “Leto va Kraljevici” offered more than 40 events between 23 June and 1 September, ranging from concerts to historic regattas. The 27th “Zlatni lav” theatre festival in Umag awarded prizes to productions from Croatia, Slovenia and North Macedonia. In Pula, the 73rd film festival introduced a new “Authors’ Room” programme under the Pula PRO initiative. Bihać, Bosnia‑and‑Herzegovina, launched an extensive summer cultural calendar and the 52nd International Una regatta, while Zaton in Montenegro concluded its “Zatonsko kulturno ljeto” with literary awards and performances.
