Balkan summer and autumn festivals 2026

Overview

The Western Balkans’ festival and cultural season continued through early September 2026. In Montenegro, Budva reported a surge in tourism, while Cetinje prepared for the ‘Rijeka doživljaja’ event on 6 September. Podgorica is set to host the 41st International Alternative Theatre Festival (FIAT). In Slovenia, upcoming September events include ‘Promenada okusov’ in Velenje, the Europark Maribor 26th anniversary, and Radio Študent’s 26th Club Marathon.

In Croatia, cultural activities expanded through community and art-focused initiatives. The Association of Persons with Disabilities of Koprivnica-Križevci County organized the 30th meeting of persons with disabilities alongside the 18th Ješkovo art colony at Art Centar Ješkovo. In Šibenik, the SHIP festival is hosting 50 performers from 26 countries and over 100 speakers. The music scene is preparing for an autumn season; the renovated Pogon kulture in Rijeka will host various events through November. Additional programming includes the 8th Zadar Organ Festival, the NOcTEs Aquae Iasae festival, and the ‘Stari i novi običaji u Omišlju’ event.

New developments in September include the 19th Vriska book fair and festival in Rijeka, scheduled for 12–19 September, featuring international authors such as Oksana Zabuzhko and Trude Teige. Pula is hosting the 8th European Conference on Creative Arts Therapies (ECARTE) from 8–11 September. The Ponta Lopud Book Bridge festival will run from 17–19 September.

Recent activities in Croatia have further diversified. In Slavonski Brod, the 5th Antique and Curiosities Fair featured approximately 30 exhibitors. Skradin hosted the 3rd Risotto and Lifestyle Festival, while Rugvica held the “Tak smo negda govorili” ethnographic exhibition. Musical events include the Klassisk i Sentrum festival in Lopar and the Impro Jam in Zadar. In Pula, the “Pulska noć” celebration drew thousands, and Zagreb is preparing for the fourth Open House Zagreb festival, providing free access to 38 buildings.
