Montepuez Ruby Mine faces financial pressure and upcoming audit

Gemfields Group Limited’s Montepuez Ruby Mine (MRM) in Mozambique is facing operational and financial challenges. Interim CEO David Lovett confirmed that the mine is currently unable to pay management and auction fees to the group due to weak ruby grades, despite a significant increase in processing capacity. While ore production rose 133% in the first half of the year, premium ruby production fell by 13%, leading to a $125.2 million impairment. The company is in early-stage discussions with banks regarding potential refinancing to manage its debt position.

In a separate development regarding oversight, independent audit firm KPMG PRI has announced an on-site assessment of the Montepuez Ruby Mine scheduled for November 2026. The audit will evaluate the operation’s performance against the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) Standard for Responsible Mining. During the visit, auditors intend to collect feedback from local stakeholders, including community members, mine workers, and government officials, to assess the mine’s impact on local communities.
