Mining sustainability audits in Mozambique and Guinea

Mining operations in Mozambique and Guinea are undergoing various sustainability and performance assessments. In Mozambique, Syrah Resources Limited’s Balama graphite mine is scheduled for an independent third-party follow-up audit by SCS Global Services in late 2026 to assess alignment with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) criteria.

Separately, Gemfields Group Limited’s Montepuez Ruby Mine (MRM) in Mozambique is facing financial difficulties due to weak ruby grades, which led to a $125.2 million impairment despite increased ore production. The mine is currently in discussions with banks regarding potential refinancing. Additionally, KPMG PRI is scheduled to conduct an on-site assessment of the Montepuez Ruby Mine in November 2026 to evaluate its performance against IRMA standards through stakeholder feedback.

In Guinea, the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG) has maintained its certification under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard V2 following a surveillance audit in June 2026. This certification covers the Sangarédi mine, associated railway and processing facilities, and port operations.
