Balkan nations advance major regional road and highway projects
Several Balkan countries are advancing significant infrastructure projects to improve regional connectivity. In Croatia, a new 33-kilometer fast road route connecting Dubrovnik to Čilipi Airport has been finalized. The €350 million project, which includes 11 tunnels and 11 viaducts, aims to reduce transit traffic through Župa Dubrovačka and is expected to take at least ten years to complete.
In Montenegro, Monteput has received 22 bids for the Smokovac–Tološi section of the Bar–Boljare highway. This 10.5-kilometer stretch is a critical component of the national highway network. Additionally, the Montenegrin government has approved land expropriation in Kotor, Budva, Bar, and Ulcinj for bypass construction and regional road reconstruction.
In Serbia, construction continues on the 18-kilometer Kuzmin–Sremska Rača highway, a key link in the Belgrade–Sarajevo route. The project features a new 1,310-meter bridge over the Sava River and an integrated border complex to facilitate faster movement of goods and people between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the government has prioritized the Banjaluka bypass. A 2.5-kilometer section near Tunjice is being fast-tracked to connect the Banjaluka–Prijedor highway to the existing road network, with land expropriation costs estimated at a minimum of 100 million KM.
