Italy reports Dengue and West Nile virus cases across multiple regions

Italy is experiencing a rise in mosquito-borne illnesses, including confirmed and suspected cases of Dengue fever and West Nile virus across several regions.

In Salento, ASL Lecce has reported two cases of autochthonous Dengue, meaning the infection was contracted locally rather than through travel. One case is confirmed in a person currently hospitalized in Liguria who had stayed in Ugento, Ruffano, and Alliste. A second probable case involves a relative in Milan who visited the same areas. Health authorities have launched urgent mosquito disinfestation measures in the affected municipalities.

In Tuscany, a suspected Dengue case has been identified in the Castelnuovo area of Prato, prompting precautionary disinfestation. Other reported cases in the region include Montespertoli and Pisa. In Trieste, ASUGI confirmed an imported Dengue case and initiated mosquito control protocols near the Ospedale Maggiore.

Additionally, in Catanzaro, the Mayor has issued an ordinance to control Culex pipiens mosquitoes to combat the West Nile virus following positive detections in Satriano, Montepaone, and Sellia Marina. In Montesilvano, a municipal disinfestation campaign is scheduled to begin on September 7.
