Montevideo port conflict ends with five-year collective agreement
The conflict at the Port of Montevideo has concluded following the signing of a five-year collective agreement between the port company Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) and the Sindicato Único Portuario y Ramas Afines (Supra). The agreement aims to provide operational stability and predictability for the terminal.
For workers, the deal increases the guaranteed daily wage from 20 to 21 days, alongside a scheduled increase agenda for those with fewer total days. While government officials, including Minister of Labor Juan Castillo and Presidential Secretary Alejandro Sánchez, welcomed the resolution, the prolonged industrial action caused significant economic damage and impacted the country's international image. The conflict also highlighted internal divisions within the government and the Frente Amplio regarding the declaration of mandatory minimum services.
