High Fens wildfire contained but remains a threat to Belgium

A massive wildfire in the High Fens nature reserve, the largest recorded in Belgium since 1911, has been contained but remains a significant threat. The blaze has destroyed approximately 3,000 hectares of land. While authorities have announced that the fire is encircled and unlikely to spread further, they warn that it is not yet fully fixed or controlled.

There is a high risk of reignition due to the fire penetrating peat layers, which can cause smoldering underground for weeks. To combat the blaze, emergency services have utilized the European Civil Protection Mechanism, receiving aerial assistance from Norway, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Evacuation orders for residents in Belgian villages and the German municipality of Montjoie have been lifted, allowing hundreds of people to return to their homes. However, emergency crews remain on high alert to monitor for new outbreaks of flame.
