Western Europe drought and escalating wildfires

Overview

In late July 2026, the Netherlands and Belgium imposed water-extraction bans in the Vechtstromen management area and Flemish Brabant. Following these restrictions, Belgian and French municipalities extended fire-prevention orders. The governor of Namur province prolonged the Walcourt ban on open-flame activities—including barbecues, fireworks, lanterns, and thermal weed-killers—until 18 August. In Aumale, France, a similar decree prohibits naked-flame cooking devices and fireworks in public spaces, particularly during late August celebrations.

By mid-August, the drought situation in Wallonia intensified. While the regional drought cell initially declined to implement new measures despite worsening river flows and groundwater levels, water scarcity has since forced 15 communes—including Libramont, Chimay, Bouillon, and Rochefort—to implement usage restrictions. To manage rising consumption and decreasing river flows, Vivaqua has activated water reserves from two quarries in Écaussinnes and Ligny. Critical thresholds are being approached, such as the Meuse river flow at Tailfer, which is nearing 19 m³/s, limiting local drinking water production. Existing bans on fishing, kayaking, navigation, and swimming at several lakes remain in effect.

Extreme drought and heatwaves have contributed to multiple wildfires. In the Hautes-Fagnes region, a massive wildfire has grown to burn approximately 1,600 hectares, marking the largest blaze recorded in Belgium and surpassing the 2014 record. To combat the fire, the European Union has deployed emergency reinforcements, including helicopters and water bomber aircraft from the Czech Republic, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Local firefighters, farmers, and the Belgian army are engaged in containment efforts. The fire has threatened residential areas like Sourbrodt, prompting preparations for evacuations and the evacuation of a local children's summer camp. Smoke has also been reported drifting into Germany’s Vulkaneifel region.
