Montjuïc Cemetery holds tribute to victims of Francoist repression
A ceremony was held at the Fossar de la Pedrera in the Montjuïc Cemetery to honor more than 1,700 people executed, imprisoned, or persecuted by the Franco regime for political and ideological reasons. The mass grave contains the remains of individuals executed between 1939 and 1952 in Barcelona, many of whom were shot at Camp de la Bota.
The site serves as a memorial space for those who suffered repression while defending democracy and human rights. Dignified in 1985 through an initiative by the Associació Pro-Memòria als Immolats per la Llibertat a Catalunya, the space was designed by architect Beth Galí to preserve the memory of the victims. It has been part of the Democratic Memorial Memory Space Network since 2009.
The commemoration took place during the National Day in Memory of the Victims of the Civil War and the Victims of the Franco Dictatorship. The event was presided over by the Minister of Justice, Ramon Espadaler, who emphasized the commitment to keeping the memory of the victims alive. This year's tribute also marked the 50th anniversary of the Associació Pro-Memòria.
