Spanish commemorations of Francoist repression
Overview
Commemorations and new memorials are being established in Spain to honor victims of Francoist repression.
In Barcelona, a ceremony was held at the Montjuïc Cemetery to pay tribute to over 1,700 individuals who were executed, imprisoned, or persecuted for political and ideological reasons between 1939 and 1952. The event, presided over by Minister of Justice Ramon Espadaler, marked the 50th anniversary of the Associació Pro-Memòria and emphasized the commitment to preserving the memory of those who defended democracy.
In Quart de Poblet, the municipality unveiled a sculpture titled ‘El Pes de la Memòria’ by artist Miguel Borrego to honor 14 local residents executed by the regime between 1939 and 1942. However, just five days after its inauguration, the monument was vandalized with extremist graffiti. Local authorities reported inscriptions such as ‘Rojos no’ and ‘España’, as well as two Celtic crosses, a symbol associated with neo-Nazi and far-right groups.
The Quart de Poblet City Council condemned the attack as ‘intolerable’, asserting that ‘neither hate nor incivility will ever erase their memory’. An investigation into the vandalism is currently underway.
