Monza advances urban regeneration through metro expansion and new green spaces
Monza is undergoing significant urban transformation through new infrastructure and green space projects. Regarding the expansion of the M5 metro line, the association HQMonza has addressed concerns about the impact on local woodland. The group clarified that the construction of the new terminus at the former Caserma IV Novembre will only temporarily utilize a marginal strip of the 24,000-square-meter wooded area, representing less than 5% of the space.
Mayor Paolo Pilotto noted that the site will host a multi-use development including student housing, the M5 terminus, a commuter parking lot, and a new provincial headquarters for the Guardia di Finanza. While acknowledging the loss of some green space, the administration emphasizes the project's necessity for city connectivity.
In a separate urban regeneration effort, a new 8,000-square-meter public park has opened in Piazzale Virgilio. The project involved depaving a previously built-up area to restore soil permeability and increase greenery. The park features 150 new trees, a 600-cubic-meter biolake designed for natural water purification and flood risk mitigation, sports areas, and new connections to the local cycling network and the Villoresi Canal.
