Monza residential project at former Mamete center sparks local opposition

A proposed residential development in Monza has sparked opposition from a coordination of local committees and associations. The Aspromonte implementation plan, adopted by the municipal government on July 7, 2026, involves demolishing the decommissioned Mamete fitness center to construct a five-story building. The project aims to provide approximately 8,100 cubic meters of space, including 26 apartments, some of which are designated for subsidized housing.

Local groups have raised several objections to the plan, primarily focusing on the impact on neighborhood traffic and the location of green spaces. Critics argue that the existing buildings could have been repurposed for productive, tertiary, or commercial use rather than being demolished for new residential construction.

Furthermore, the committees have challenged the traffic impact study attached to the plan, noting that it relies on data from Monza Mobilità collected in late 2019. They contend these figures are outdated and do not reflect current traffic conditions in the area, which includes via Marsala, largo Mazzini, via Buonarroti, and via Mentana. Residents have until August 21 to submit formal observations to the municipal protocol.
