In mid-August 2026, the Aspromonte implementation plan, which involves demolishing the decommissioned Mamete fitness center to build a five-story residential building with 26 apartments, faced backlash from local committees. Opponents argued that the existing structures should be repurposed for commercial or tertiary use rather than demolished. They also challenged the project’s traffic impact study, claiming it relied on outdated 2019 data.

By late August 2026, the Agenzia del Demanio announced a different large-scale project to repurpose the former IV Novembre barracks. This initiative seeks private sector proposals to transform 19,000 square meters of public land into a student housing complex providing at least 600 beds. The plan requires subsidized pricing, with 30% of beds reserved for low-income and meritorious students, and aims to integrate the site with the upcoming M5 metro station.
