South Korea economy outlook rises on semiconductor boom
South Korea's economic outlook is being reshaped by a significant semiconductor boom driven by AI demand. The Korea Development Institute (KDI) raised its 2024 growth forecast from 2.5% to 3.2%, citing strong exports and facility investment. Moody's provided an even more optimistic view, projecting 3.5% growth for the year, noting that high-end memory suppliers in Korea are difficult to replace.
Samsung Electronics is experiencing rapid growth, with contract liabilities increasing by 56.4% as of June due to long-term supply agreements for memory chips. This surge in demand is expected to drive substantial operating profits through next year.
However, the economic benefits remain uneven. While the semiconductor sector thrives, the growth has not fully permeated the labor and household sectors. South Korea's household credit reached a record high of 2,007.8 trillion won in the second quarter, driven by increased housing loans and stock market investments. This rise in debt has prompted discussions regarding potential interest rate hikes by the Bank of Korea to manage financial stability.
