Moon exploration: Technosignature searches and mineral mapping

Researchers at the SETI Institute, led by Dr. Lewis Pinault, have proposed a new method for detecting extraterrestrial civilizations by searching for technosignatures within lunar regolith. Rather than traditional radio signal monitoring, this approach suggests that microscopic particles—either intentional or as industrial waste from space exploration—could have drifted into the Solar System and settled on the Moon. Because the Moon lacks geological processes that erase surface history, its dust layer could preserve such evidence for billions of years. Scientists suggest using microscopy, tomography, and artificial intelligence to analyze approximately one cubic meter of lunar material.

In a separate development regarding lunar utility, the Polish company Creotech Instruments is leading a consortium for the European Space Agency (ESA) Twardowski mission. Scheduled for launch from French Guiana in late 2029, this 'Small Mission to the Moon' aims to map the lunar surface using infrared radiation. The mission's primary goal is to locate essential minerals, such as those containing oxygen and hydrogen, which are critical for the construction of future lunar research bases.
