Lunar exploration and resource mapping efforts
Overview
Lunar exploration efforts are increasingly focused on resource identification and the search for extraterrestrial evidence. Researchers at the SETI Institute have proposed searching for technosignatures within lunar regolith, suggesting that microscopic particles could preserve evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations for billions of years.
Simultaneously, industrial and scientific missions are advancing lunar resource mapping. The Polish company Creotech Instruments is leading a consortium for the European Space Agency (ESA) Twardowski mission, which aims to use infrared radiation to locate essential minerals like oxygen and hydrogen. This is complemented by developments from the Polish startup MIRORES, which is creating a high-resolution spectrometer for the ESA LUPE project. These technologies are intended to support In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) by identifying water, oxygen, and fuel deposits to facilitate the construction of future lunar research bases.
