Moorstraße in Lower Saxony closed for reconstruction after subsidence
From 15 July 2026 the Moorstraße, a two‑lane road through the Totes Moor nature reserve in Lower Saxony, will be closed indefinitely for safety reasons. Years of drying and subsidence have caused cracks, heaves and depressions in the peat‑filled sub‑soil, prompting a 30 km/h speed limit and a ban on cyclists.
The city of Neustadt am Rübenberge will begin replacing the weakened road and footbridge with modern reinforced‑concrete structures on that date. The bridge replacement is scheduled to last until at least May 2027, after which the entire Moorstraße and its parallel cycle path may be rebuilt. Until then, traffic is detoured via the B6 and the nearby town of Schneeren.
The closure affects local tourism and daily commuting, as the route connects the K 347 corridor between Neustadt and the Steinhuder Meer region, and serves as a popular access point to the historic Alte Moorhütte.
