Morelia Civil Protection warns of flooding risk for 69 neighborhoods amid active 2026 rainy season

The municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department in Morelia, Michoacán, warned that 69 neighborhoods—especially those near the Río Grande and Río Chiquito—face a heightened risk of flooding as the rainy season progresses. Water levels above the curb or accumulation of 45 cm are considered flood conditions. Authorities urged residents to develop family emergency plans, monitor weather forecasts, keep evacuation routes clear, and report emergencies to 911. Efforts to clean and dredge rivers, channels, and drains have been ongoing since February to reduce blockage risks.

State‑wide, the Coordination of Civil Protection forecast that the 2026 rainy and tropical‑cyclone season could be more active than average because of El Niño influences. The National Meteorological Service expects 18‑21 tropical systems, with 9‑10 reaching tropical‑storm strength and up to six potentially becoming Category 1‑2 hurricanes. Preventive actions include continuous monitoring, risk‑area reviews, inter‑agency coordination, temporary shelter readiness, and public advisories to follow official information and request help via 911.
