Morelia hosts 24th International Film Festival with major Mexican cinema stars

The 24th edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM) commenced on October 16, 2026, in Michoacán, Mexico. The festival opened with the screening of ‘Campeón gabacho’, directed by Jonás Cuarón and produced by Alfonso Cuarón.

This year’s edition features prominent figures in Mexican cinema, including Guillermo del Toro, who will present a 4K restored version of ‘El laberinto del fauno’ to mark its 20th anniversary. Both Del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón are set to receive the Filmoteca Medal from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Other notable participants include Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, who are attending as directors.

The festival includes 96 films in competition across various categories, such as Mexican feature films, documentaries, and short films. The Mexican feature film jury is presided over by Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona. Beyond the main event, the festival aims to strengthen the local film industry and promote cultural access through community programs like ‘Cine Mexicano en Acción’.

Local authorities, including the Mayor of Morelia and the Secretary of Tourism of Michoacán, emphasized the festival’s role in driving economic development, tourism, and the consolidation of Morelia as a major audiovisual production hub.
