Morelia monument plaza to undergo traffic reconfiguration

The Lázaro Cárdenas Monument plaza in Morelia, Michoacán, will cease to function as a roundabout to accommodate new mass transit systems. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and María Elena Huerta Moctezuma, head of the Secretariat of Urban Development and Mobility (SEDUM), announced that the reconfiguration aims to improve mobility in a high-traffic zone where 65 percent of public transport routes currently converge.

The new traffic scheme is designed to integrate the upcoming Morebús bus rapid transit system and the city's cable car service. Once the construction of these systems is complete, the Morebús will operate via a confined lane around the monument. The plan also includes the installation of an intelligent traffic light system to regulate flow between public and private vehicles.

Officials state that the area currently handles approximately 80,000 vehicles daily. By returning the area to its original design from 25 years ago and implementing these technological updates, authorities expect to reduce transit wait times in the zone by up to 50 percent.
