Morelos and Jalisco towns work to prevent drainage floods this rainy season

Mayor Heladio Rafael Sánchez Zavala of Yecapixtla, Morelos, said the municipality faces little risk of significant flooding during the current rainy season. Natural barrancas act as drainage channels, and the town conducts annual cleaning and continuous monitoring to keep them clear of debris.

In Zapotlán el Grande, Jalisco, mayor Jorge Silva Sánchez reported frequent collapses of the drainage system, which uses aging asbestos pipes. Blockages are caused by garbage, oil and other waste dumped into the sewers. The municipal government has been cleaning the lines and seeks a resolution from the state water commission; if necessary, the town will fund repairs itself.
