Morelos violence escalates after criminal suspect release
Violence has escalated in the eastern region of Morelos, Mexico, following the controversial release of José David 'N', also known as 'El Güero del Gym'. Authorities reportedly released the alleged member of the Pueblos Unidos criminal group to secure the release of three kidnapped criminal investigation agents.
The release has triggered a wave of retaliatory violence and civil unrest. Criminal groups have targeted local businesses and public transport, including the burning of a seafood restaurant, an Aurrerá warehouse parking lot, and threats against transport workers that led to service suspensions in Oaxtepec and Tlayacapan. In Cuautla, a transport worker was shot and killed.
In response to the perceived institutional failure, local residents in Totolapan engaged in road blockades, burning tires and vehicles to protest. Meanwhile, the State Prosecutor General, Fernando Blumenkron Escobar, is facing threats from criminal groups and calls for resignation from the legislature. Blumenkron has rejected these calls and stated that the State Prosecutor's Office is coordinating with federal authorities to investigate the recent surge in violence and the operations of regional criminal cells.
