Violence in Morelos, Mexico

Overview

Violence in the eastern region of Morelos, Mexico, has intensified following a series of targeted killings and subsequent civil unrest.

Initial reports indicated a wave of violence in the municipalities of Tlalnepantla and Yecapixtla. In Tlalnepantla, five individuals were found dead with signs of torture and gunshot wounds, while two men were discovered dead in Yecapixtla accompanied by an intimidating message from criminal groups.

The situation escalated following the release of José David ‘N’, an alleged member of the Pueblos Unidos criminal group, who was reportedly released to secure the freedom of three kidnapped criminal investigation agents. This release triggered retaliatory actions, including the burning of a seafood restaurant and an Aurrerá warehouse parking lot, as well as threats against public transport workers in Oaxtepec and Tlayacapan. One transport worker was shot and killed in Cuautla.

In response to the violence and perceived institutional failures, residents in Totolapan conducted road blockades using burning tires and vehicles. State Prosecutor General Fernando Blumenkron Escobar has faced calls for resignation and threats from criminal groups, though he has rejected these demands and stated that his office is coordinating with federal authorities to investigate regional criminal cells.
