Morena advances fair rent law in Mexico City

The Morena parliamentary group in the Mexico City Congress has announced that the 'Ley de Rentas Justas, Razonables y Asequibles' (Fair, Reasonable, and Affordable Rent Law) will continue to move forward despite opposition from the PAN party.

Spokesperson Ángel Tamariz stated that the legislation aims to combat gentrification and protect the right to housing. A key component of the proposal is ensuring that rent increases do not exceed inflation rates, which is intended to prevent the displacement of families and original community neighborhoods.

The law also proposes the creation of the 'Defensoría de las Relaciones Inquilinarias' (Tenancy Relations Defense Office) to protect both tenants and landlords from real estate market abuses. This initiative is part of a broader housing policy in the capital; according to Mayor Clara Brugada, the housing budget has been increased from 4 billion to 9 billion pesos annually.
