Mexico City fair rent law proposal

Overview

The Morena party in Mexico City is advancing the ‘Ley de Rentas Justas, Razonables y Asequibles’ (Fair, Reasonable, and Affordable Rent Law) to combat gentrification and protect housing rights. The proposed legislation seeks to prevent family displacement by ensuring rent increases do not exceed inflation rates and proposes establishing the ‘Defensoría de las Relaciones Inquilinarias’ (Tenancy Relations Defense Office) to protect both tenants and landlords.

To build support for the initiative, Morena launched the ‘#NadieSinTecho’ campaign to collect citizen signatures through digital portals and in-person efforts at workplaces and parks. Additionally, deputies have announced an ‘Open Parliament’ to integrate citizen demands into the legal framework before a final vote in the Mexico City Congress.
