Morena postpones internal candidate registration to late August

Mexico’s ruling party Morena announced that the registration period for candidates seeking federal deputy seats and municipal mayoralties will be delayed until the end of August 2026. The party also moved up the opening of the municipal coordination registrations to the same timeframe and said the process will include specific eligibility criteria for those contesting the 17 gubernatorial races. Internal selections will be based on telephone surveys and will be preceded by territorial outreach and unity calls from party leaders. A poll released by Gobernarte shows senator Julieta Ramírez leading the competition for the Baja California governorship with 44.1% support, and Morena scheduled a first filter for Baja California aspirants on 25 August. The postponement affects the planned registration of 500 district coordinations and reflects a broader effort to tighten internal rules and avoid internal disputes.
