Morena dual nationality reform restricts political rights, says Ramiro Ramos

Ramiro Ramos Salinas, former president of the PRI in Tamaulipas, has criticized a constitutional reform promoted by the Morena party that restricts citizens with dual nationality from running for public office, including the presidency and governorships.

Ramos Salinas argued that the reform constitutes a setback for civil rights, particularly for binational citizens living in border regions like Nuevo Laredo, where dual nationality is common. He stated that the measure creates a distinction between ‘first-class’ and ‘second-class’ Mexicans by implying that dual nationality suggests divided loyalty.

Additionally, Ramos Salinas expressed concern regarding a recent reform that allows for the annulment of elections if they receive support or coverage from foreign media. He warned that in a compromised judicial system, such rules could be used to invalidate election results based on interviews given to outlets in Texas or McAllen. He characterized these legislative moves as a distraction from urgent national issues, such as the security crisis.
