Morena faces internal friction and alliance tensions ahead of 2027 elections

The ruling coalition in Mexico is facing internal tensions as it prepares for the 2027 midterm elections. Morena national president Ariadna Montiel Reyes has reaffirmed the party's commitment to its alliance with the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM), despite recent friction regarding the selection of state coordinators.

To address internal disputes, Morena plans to increase transparency by publicly sharing the results of opinion polls used to define candidates for 17 governorships. However, the PT has expressed significant dissatisfaction, with coordinator Reginaldo Sandoval Flores accusing Morena of acting with self-sufficiency and disdain for its allies. The PT has indicated it may support Morena aspirants who were excluded from official selections, such as Andrea Chávez in Chihuahua, or even run its own candidates in certain states.

Friction has been specifically noted in states including Zacatecas, Baja California, Michoacán, and Quintana Roo. In Michoacán, Senator Raúl Morón is pursuing legal avenues following his exclusion from the party's coordination. While the coalition is expected to remain intact in most regions, political leaders noted that the alliance may fracture in San Luis Potosí.
