Morena faces criticism over incorporation of former rival politicians

Academics and political figures are criticizing the evolution of the Morena party in Mexico as it prepares for the 2027 elections. Academic Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera argued that Morena has transitioned into an elite party that mirrors the characteristics of the former PRI regime by incorporating politicians from various parties, including the PAN, PRI, PRD, and PVEM.

Historian Lorenzo Meyer also questioned the authenticity of the political regeneration movement, specifically targeting the role of the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM). Meyer suggested that the PVEM's involvement contradicts the concept of regeneration, noting that the party's origins were not rooted in genuine ecological struggle but rather in opportunistic political positioning within the old regime.

In Chihuahua, PAN coordinator Alfredo Chávez Madrid commented on the political landscape, suggesting that Morena's strategy appears to rely on recruiting former members of opposition parties, such as the PAN, to secure electoral victories.
