Morena party political shifts and internal challenges

Overview

The Morena party in Mexico is facing scrutiny regarding its political identity and internal stability as the 2027 elections approach.

Academics and historians have criticized the party for incorporating former rivals from groups such as the PAN, PRI, PRD, and PVEM. Critics, including Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera and Lorenzo Meyer, have argued that this strategy mirrors the former PRI regime and undermines the concept of political regeneration. Specifically, the involvement of the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) has been questioned as opportunistic.

In Nuevo León, the party is experiencing practical instability following the designation of Clara Luz Flores as a virtual gubernatorial candidate. This move led to the resignation of three local deputies, including former caucus coordinator Mario Soto, who joined Movimiento Ciudadano (MC). These defections have shifted the balance of power in the local congress, leaving Morena with six legislators while MC holds a majority of 11. Furthermore, coalition allies such as the Labor Party (PT) are signaling a desire for greater independence in determining future candidacies.
