Morena faces defections in Nuevo León
The Morena party is facing internal instability in Nuevo León following the designation of Clara Luz Flores as a virtual candidate for the governorship. Three local deputies have resigned from the party to join Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), the party led by Governor Samuel García.
Mario Soto, the former coordinator of the Morena caucus, resigned after a disciplinary process and joined MC along with his substitute, Francisco del Bosque. Brenda Velázquez also left the party to join MC. These departures have significantly weakened Morena's presence in the local congress, leaving them with only six legislators, while Movimiento Ciudadano has become the majority faction with 11 members.
Additionally, Morena's allies in the 4T coalition, the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Party (PVEM), are signaling potential independence. The PT has stated that its candidate, Jesús Elizondo, should be evaluated against Flores in polls to determine who will lead the candidacy for the 2027 elections.
