Morena leader Ariadna Montiel backs candidate process and demands US explain 'El Mayo' operation

Morena national president Ariadna Montiel used a recent party meeting to cite Senator Félix Salgado as an example of a politician who, after stepping aside from the Guerrero candidacy, will continue grassroots activism. She said the party will support his participation in upcoming sovereignty‑defending assemblies.

Montiel also reiterated that the Morena leadership is still reviewing the documentation of the 277 individuals who have registered to run for the 2027 gubernatorial elections, noting that the process remains transparent and that any irregularities will be addressed.

In a separate press conference, Montiel demanded that the United States clarify the operation that removed Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada from Mexican territory. She rejected the U.S. description of the incident as a “detention,” calling it a “subtraction,” and urged that any security cooperation respect Mexico’s sovereignty while pursuing justice and truth.
