Mexico's Morena and PT parties face legal and diplomatic challenges

Political tensions are rising in Mexico as Morena and the Labor Party (PT) navigate legal, diplomatic, and internal challenges. In Coahuila, both parties have filed unconstitutionality actions with the Supreme Court against recent state electoral reforms.

On the diplomatic front, Morena leader Ariadna Montiel has responded to US Treasury (OFAC) sanctions against Rafael Buenrostro Martín, who is alleged to have links to the Sinaloa Cartel. Montiel stated that the party will not automatically accept US allegations as fact, asserting that responsibility must be determined by Mexican authorities and the judiciary. The Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) has already moved to block accounts of individuals sanctioned by the US.

Regarding future electoral alliances, PT leader Alberto Anaya indicated that a full coalition with Morena for the 2027 elections is unlikely due to a lack of willingness to reach agreements, though partial alliances remain possible.

Internally, Morena's legislative bloc, led by Ricardo Monreal, missed the party's 15th-anniversary celebration at the Auditorio Nacional. Monreal apologized, stating that deputies remained in the Chamber of Deputies to prioritize legislative debates and the defense of national interests.
