Morena party to bar child support debtors from candidacy in Hidalgo

Marco Antonio Rico Mercado, president of the Morena party executive committee in Hidalgo, announced that individuals identified as child support debtors or perpetrators of violence will be barred from seeking political office in the upcoming electoral process.

Rico Mercado emphasized that such status must be duly certified and accredited with sufficient evidence. While noting that the party does not act as a judicial body, he reiterated that being a delinquent child support payer is sufficient grounds for disqualification from nomination.

This move follows a 2025 reform to the state's Electoral Code, approved by the 65th local legislature, which prohibits delinquent child support debtors from running for popular election. Additionally, reforms to the state's Family Law aim to make the Registry of Child Support Debtors public to protect the interests of children. The registry includes any individual who has failed to meet their responsibilities for more than 90 days.
