Morena politicians in Mexico push for candidacies and re‑election amid intra‑party disputes

In the state of Hidalgo, around a dozen municipal presidents from Morena, PAN, PT, PRDH and other parties are weighing the option of seeking re‑election in the 2027 local elections, which would make them the first officials in the region to serve two consecutive terms. Their consideration comes despite widespread allegations of nepotism and corruption that have strained party leadership.

In Yucatán, former opposition figure Joel Achach is publicly seeking a Morena candidacy, arguing he now supports the Fourth Transformation. Party members recall his recent criticism of Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena and his previous backing of rival Renán Barrera, branding him a “traitor” and questioning whether the party will grant him a nomination.

Both cases illustrate a broader pattern of local politicians attempting to align with Morena as its influence grows, despite past antagonism and ongoing concerns about political opportunism.
